It was big news back in 2009. On April 6 that year Abruzzo suffered a deadly earthquake that devastated the region leaving 308 people dead and thousands more homeless. It’s epicenter was near L’Aquila, the region’s capital, but it also affected many other surrounding communities. You don’t hear much about L’Aquila these days, the tragedy seems largely forgotten. 

Michael and I recently spent a few days in the region and were shocked to see so much devastation remaining and so much restoration work still in progress. The historical centre of L’Aquila appeared mostly deserted, as did many other smaller villages we visited. Here’s a few pictures of what we saw walking around L’Aquila.

That is depressing. I was going to say it looked like Toronto with all the cranes. But six years is a long time.
